Dr. Sujit Kumar Bajpayee holds M.Sc., MPhil, and PhD degrees in Environmental Sciences from JNU, New Delhi. He began his career in January 2001 as Environment Officer at NHPC Ltd., a Navratna CPSE, where he served for about 19 years in various hydropower projects across the North-East and at the Faridabad headquarters. During this period, he gained extensive experience in sustainability and environmental-legal issues related to hydropower development.
Recognized for his expertise, problem-solving ability, and adaptability, he was selected by UPSC in 2019 as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change under the Government’s lateral entry scheme. Over the next five years, he led key divisions including Impact Assessment, Coastal Regulation Zone, Policy & Law, Wetlands, and Compliance Monitoring, and played a pivotal role in developing the single-window green-clearance portal PARIVESH 2.0. He introduced significant reforms in environmental and CRZ clearances and served as National Focal Point for the CBD and Ramsar Convention.
He later served as Member (Full Time) and Member Secretary, CAQM, before joining the National Green Tribunal as Expert Member on 1 September 2025.
